I wanted to reiterate that creating a weekly study group is a great idea. This was always the best way for me to absorb the information and to also hear everyone's take on a particular lecture or subject.

Nursing often requires collaborating with your colleagues in a variety of settings. This is a practice to start implementing while you're still in school.

Great Post Jenna!

Thanks so much for your comment, Kevin. I agree it is unfortunate that RN's are in the ranks for being depressed. I guess it goes with the territory. It takes a toll to care for others during high stress times in their lives. Your experience at John Hopkins sounds incredible though I must say! You are lucky to have had the opportunity and I'm sure you are a better RN because of it. At the same time I certainly understand why you decided to go another route. I wish you happiness and success on your journey! I really appreciate you stopping by my blog, please come back again.

Thank you,

Jenna

Jenna,

I just wanted to "renew" this post a little as I just happened to stumble upon it. I have to say that it's unfortunate that we nurses are high up in the ranks for being depressed. Sure, the article hits the nail on the head in regards to what we healthcare professionals are confronted with.

I worked at Johns Hopkins in the Cardiac SICU. In my experience, we took care of some fairly complex patients. Things that you couldn't imagine. And, although I was confronted with this everyday, I still loved my job. I skipped to work and felt honored to be a part of that team.

However, I knew that I was just not going to be able to sustain that work environment. The experience was second to none (in my opinion), but ultimately I decided to re-invent myself and struck out on my own. I'm now a self-employed RN consultant. This path certainly isn't for everyone as it has challenges that blow me out of the water some days, but I think being an entrepreneur saved me from myself.

I was caught up in the adrenaline of that job, I loved working with the patients, and I met some amazingly genuine and smart people. Even though I cherished every day there, I knew that I would eventually come crashing down because I made it my life, even though I had a wonderful life at home. I have a lot of respect for all of you at the bedside.

I've now found my balance. I can help my patients through advocacy, education, and preventative wellness...Saving more lives, and I've also found balance in my personal life.

I've just started my side project to mentor other nurses, but I hope to help more of you find the same balance. Good to know you're out "there" Jenna.

Thanks.

Thanks for your comment J.S. I agree with what you said about writing. It seems to me that writing would be a positive thing for someone suffering from depression. Writing can help to express thoughts and emotions which seems like a nice way combat stress if you ask me. Keep writing J.S.!

Best,

Jenna

The sad and frightening thing about this study is that I have a job and a career. Between the two, I fall into FOUR of the ten categories!
Good thing I'm planning to kick the job to the curb soon. Depression's been a hot-button topic with me for years, as a longtime sufferer. Seeing statistics like this just proves that your job really CAN drain the joy out of your life!
Not giving up the writing, though. Not no way, not no how. The writing is what I thank for allowing me to retain my sanity!
Great post and best wishes :)

Untreated appendicitis can be fatal. If you think you have it you should go to the emergency room or dial 911.

My best to you,
